"In Nordic mythology, Freyja is a member of the Vanes family of gods, Njörd's daughter and Freyr's twin sister. Her daughters are Hnoss and Gersimi. The name Freyja comes from a Germanic term meaning "lady" (cf. fru or Frau in Scandinavian or German).
In Old Norse language as well as in modern Icelandic, Frú has the meaning "mistress, lady, woman". In other modern languages, the term has become Frue (Danish), Fru (Swedish), Frau (German), Vrouw (Dutch). It could be considered as the equivalent of Venus for its symbolism of beauty, but also of Minerva for its warrior attributes. It is likely that she is the most direct mythological descendant of Nerthus."
